Life in Oymyakon - the World's Coldest Village! Some new pictures and videos have emerged from the world's coldest permanently-inhabited settlement - the village Oymyakon in the Russian region of Siberia. I really don't know how the residents manage to stay put there, but they do, sometimes braving temperatures as cold as -62°C (-80°F). Take a look at what life is in this most hostile of environments: The remote Siberian village of Oymyakon is the world's coldest permanently-inhabited settlement.      The mercury on the thermometer there recently dipped to -62°C (-80°F). Brrr!      Nevertheless, life in a village cold enough to freeze your eyeballs hasn't stopped.      Local students only stop attending class when the temperature dips below -52°C (-62°F).     People still go to work as they would do anywhere else.     It's so cold that street vendors don't even need to refrigerate their fish.      With that being said, they need to keep themselves as warm as can be.      Extreme weather attracts extreme tourists. See below...      The icy landscape makes for a perfect shot of a ballerina posing in -41°C temperatures.     The village lies in the Oymyakonsky District or Russia's Sakha Republic.     The name Oymakyon means "unfrozen patch of water, where fish spend the winter".      Some say that the word means "frozen lake".    The weather was so cold on one day that it managed to break the village's new thermometer. The temperature reached -62°C.     Some 500 people still live in the village.      - Advertisement -     It lies at about 750 meters above sea level.      Yakut horses are well-accustomed to the temperatures.      The village has been nicknamed the Northern Village of Cold.      Winters are long and excessively cold in Oymyakon.     They don't stop the locals from going about their lives, however.  having trouble playing this movie? click here Incredibly, though, summertime temperatures can reach 30 °C (86 °F)      Oymyakon was a stopover for reindeer herders back in the 1920s and 1930s.       The settlement became permanent due to the Soviets forcing the area's nomadic population to put down firm roots.      One positive effect of the cold is that the village looks a winter wonderland for much of the year.      The extreme cold even makes mine tunnels beautiful.      Back in 1933, the lowest-ever temperature in the Northern Hemisphere, -67.7°C (−89.9°F), was recorded in the village.      Daylight ranges from a mere three hours in December to 21 hours in June.      Make it quick if you want to go sightseeing in winter!     Who knows? Maybe icy lashes will become a new beauty trend!
