What is a 'smart city'?
A city equipped with basic infrastructure to give a decent quality of life,
a clean and sustainable environment through application of some smart solutions.
Basic infrastructure
Assured water and electricity supply, sanitation and solid waste management,
efficient urban mobility and public transport, robust IT connectivity, e-governance and
citizen participation, safety and security of citizens.
Smart solutions
Public information, grievance redressal, electronic service delivery, citizens' engagement,
waste to energy & fuel, waste to compost, 100% treatment of waste water,
smart meters & management, monitoring water quality, renewable source of energy,
efficient energy and green building, smart parking, intelligent traffic management system.
What's the next step?
The next step is identification of the 100 cities and for this a city challenge competition
to be conducted by Bloomberg Philanthropies is envisaged. The current plan looks to
select 20 cities this year followed by 40 each in the next two years.
Smart Cities Council India has been formed
It is part of the US-based Smart Cities Council, which is a consortium of smart city
practitioners and experts, with a 100-plus member and advisor organizations
operating in over 140 countries.
All states will get at least one smart city
A Special Purpose Vehicle will be created for each city to implement Smart City action plan.
The SPV will be signed with the urban local body, state government and the
Centre for implementation of the project.
How it will work
After government announces the guidelines, states will be asked to nominate
names of cities for a 'City Challenge Competition' and the chosen ones will get
Central fund of Rs 100 crore each year for 5 years.
