[ ::: ♥Keep_Mailing♥ ::: ]™ Fwd: End ivory

20,000 elephants are killed each year -- their face hacked to bits by machetes for their ivory. But China just announced they're shutting down their giant ivory market -- and we could get the EU to follow suit. If we win this, we can save elephants for good. Add your name and share widely:

Dear friends,

We've pushed elephants to the brink of extinction but we've never had a more hopeful moment to save them.

China's enormous legal ivory market has long been the excuse for inaction by governments around the world. Legal markets gave poachers cover for their blood ivory -- they just pretend it's antique!

But China just announced they'll make the entire ivory trade illegal -- this changes everything! Now, EU countries are discussing Europe's next steps on ivory. Germany and Luxembourg already want to follow China with a total ban -- let's give them the support of millions around the world, and take the next giant step to save elephants for good:

End Europe's Ivory Trade

Elephants are incredible beings. They can recognize themselves in the mirror, they understand death, and they spend days weeping over their fallen family members. And we're absolutely devastating them -- an elephant is killed every 15 minutes. They could be driven extinct in a decade.

Time and again it's been shown that the existence of a legal ivory market provides cover for the sale of blood ivory. That's why China shutting down their vast market is a stunning ray of hope for the future of this species. Europe's ivory markets make no sense -- the EU has played a leading role in fighting poaching, and now China is moving, there are simply no excuses for allowing ivory to be sold!

Let's show holdouts like Belgium, Austria and the UK where the world stands -- for the end to all ivory trading. Add your name and share the page widely to help build an enormous global call -- Europe is discussing this right now:

End Europe's Ivory Trade

Last summer more than 1.5 million of us called on the world's largest conservation congress to pass a total ivory trade ban -- and they did it. Now we've got to get to work ensuring governments follow through, and give future generations a chance to experience the wonder of elephants.

With hope,

Danny, Bert, Marigona, Allison and the rest of the Avaaz team
