Every day the number of people suffering from chronic breathing disorders and
various cancers are rising steeply. One of the major cause does this shocking
trend is the exposure to pollutants and toxins in the air, water, and even food.
In 1973 during the Skylab III mission, NASA identified 107 volatile organic chemicals (VOCs)
that were emitting from synthetic materials inside the spacecraft. NASA realized
that indoor air pollution in any tightly sealed structure could present serious
health problems and should be addressed. The result was NASA commissioning
numerous studies since the late 1980s on the effect of indoor plants on closed structures
These studies aimed at providing pure air in space stations concluded that
indoor plants may provide a natural way of removing toxic agents such as
benzene formaldehyde and Trichloroethylene. Here are 10
plants that purify the indoor air effectively:
1. Boston Fern:
In a study by Wolverton it was concluded that the most effective house

Studies by Stanley J. Kays and colleagues at the University of Georgia also
documented the ability of different plant species to remove VOCs such as
benzene, toluene, octane, and trichloroethylene
8. Snake Plant:
Snake Plant, also known as Mother-in-Law's tongue, is one of the hardest to
kill houseplants. Unlike other plants Snake Plant is unique for absorbing Carbon dioxide
and releasing oxygen at night making it ideal for bedrooms and living spaces.

Aloe Vera is well known for its use as a home remedy for burns and cuts, but
its uses go beyond that since it is a good air purifier. Most
importantly it is easy to grow in most conditions
10. Bamboo Palm:
Bamboo palm is a great humidifier and filters benzene and trichloroethylene from
the indoor air. It requires less sunlight and resistant to most pests.
It should be remembered that despite the amazing air purifying effects,
many of these plants contains toxins that are harmful if consumed. So make
sure to keep them away from the reach of pets and children.
