Make Food Coloring Naturally at Home!

Here are some recipes for food dyes that can be made at home from fruits and vegetables, and are 100 percent natural and healthy!

Purple Food Coloring from Red Cabbage

Take one half of a big red cabbage and chop it into big chunks. Put these chunks in a pot of boiling water, adding just enough water to cover the cabbage. After about an hour boiling, the cabbage should lose its color and the water should turn dark purple. Remove the pot from the heat and let it cool. Once it is completely cool, remove the cabbage and your dye is ready to use in baked good or a cooking experiment!

Red Food Coloring from Dried Hibiscus Flowers

Boil 1/2 cup of dried hibiscus flowers in about 10 cups of water. Let this mixture boil for about an hour. Once done, remove it from the heat and let it cool.

Yellow Food Coloring from Turmeric


The health benefits of this spice are widely known, meaning that it will add a healthy and colorful kick to whatever you're cooking. The taste and smell of the spice is very distinct, but you can hardly taste it in most baked goods. Just add a pinch of turmeric to whatever you'd like to turn yellow.
