"Imparting Environmental Health Awareness

For working population Using Insights from an Ancient Literary Work"

INTRODUCTION:

Enhancing awareness about Environmental Health issues due to climate change and consequent health outcomes to the medium to highly literate working populations, who form the backbone of the country's economy, is an important but difficult task. Linkages between climate change and other health implications among working populations have been well established; hence enhancing awareness in regional languages will greatly help the working population in accepting the knowledge which in turn will improve the health, productivity and quality of life of the workers. Mining the scientific wisdom by critically analyzing and enumerating the insights embedded in the ancient literary works like"Thirukurral" authored by Thiruvalluar is a novel potential area to be explored.

METHODOLOGY:

Insights related to environmental health embedded in couplets 11 – 20 in second chapter (002) "Vaan sirappu" (Blessings of the Space) in Thirukkural are critically analyzed with extreme care to remove bias in the interpretation process. E- Learning via educational videos will be posted in hosting services like the you tube explaining the ancient literature in intricate details admixed with scientific facts that can be made accessible to the working population as a medium of intervention in increasing awareness. The couplets will be used to elaborate about the fundamental concepts related to the five major elements, their resources, supply routes; various water resources and their chemical composition; desalination of water; rainwater harvesting; annual global rainfall and periodic changes in it; quantification of natural resources; about various taxa; socioeconomic, political and cognitive changes due to climate change.

EXPECTED OUTCOME:

The knowledge will help working population apply caution, adapt and be prepared to the dynamically changing exposures to various environmental aberrations. Multiple goals spanning from regional language development to priming the masses towards the traditional roots and awareness to Environmental health - all can be accomplished by this innovative E-learning methodology which can be gradually expanded to other literary works in classical languages of the world's great ancient civilizations.
