5 Marathis Who Made it Big in the U.S.

 
 


 Maharashtra has a rich history of traditions and the people here are often praised for their simple and brave lifestyle. Their achievements have crossed borders and many of them have been successful in proving themselves across various sectors. Here is a list of some of the prominent Marathis in the U.S.-



Vikram pandit



Vikram Pandit is the former CEO of Citigroup, an international bank which has around 200 million customer accounts and activities in nearly 160 countries and jurisdictions. This Indian American hailing from Nagpur is all set to establish a new bank in his country.



Pandit began his career as an associate in Morgan Stanley, being the first Indian to join the company and with time he got promoted to other major posts. Pandit serves on various prominent boards such as that of Columbia University, Columbia Business School, the Indian School of Business and the Trinity School. He is also the director of the Institute of Finance and was a board member of NASDAQ OMX.



Pandit was honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan by the Indian government in the year 2008. He received B.S and M.S degree in Electrical engineering from the University of Columbia and later on he completed M.B.A and Ph.D. from Columbia Business School.

 

 

 

 

 
 

Vinod Khosla



Khosla is a business enterprise entrepreneur and influential personality in Silicon Valley who is the co-founder of Khosla Ventures. He is one of the richest Indians in America and makes it to the Forbes 'billionaire list' quite often.




Khosla, who was one among the co-founders of Sun Microsystems worked as its first CEO and Chairman and later on he got into a venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers as a general partner. He came up with his own firm Khosla Ventures in the year 2004 and is currently heading it.

According to Forbes magazine, he is a rare Silicon Valley venture capitalist who has the potential to produce profits from a clean tech portfolio.

Khosla holds a degree in electrical engineering from IIT Delhi, Masters in Biomedical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business.

 
 
 
 
 

Fareed Zakaria



Zakaria is the editor-at-large and columnist for TIME magazine, who also hosts 'Fareed Zakaria GPS' on CNN, one of the most intelligent shows on American TV.



Fareed started his journalistic career as the managing editor of Foreign Affairs magazine in 1992 and went on to take charge as the editor of Newsweek International in the year 2000. Later he moved to TIME magazine as a contributing editor and columnist.



His interviews with some of the most prominent personalities such as Dalai Lama, Barack Obama, Manmohan Singh, King Abdullah II, Dmitry Medvedev, Moammad Gadhafi and Lula da Silva gained him a position as one of the most influential and powerful media persons in the U.S.  He was accused of plagiarism few months before and as a part of investigation, he was suspended from his job. Zakaria had to apologize for the journalistic lapse.



Zakaria who hails from Bombay received a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University and a Doctor of Philosophy in political science from Harvard University. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for his contribution towards journalism in the year 2010 and Esquire Magazine called him as "the most influential foreign policy adviser of his generation".

 

 

 

 

Nitin Nohria


 


Nitin Nohria is the dean of Harvard Business School (HBS), who previously served as co-chair of the Leadership Initiative, Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Development, and Head of the Organizational Behavior unit.


 


According to Nohria, "If you are allowed to pursue your own passion in whatever field you like, then you are likely to be successful. He also tells that, ''the most important lesson in life is generosity. If you are generous, life gives back more than what you have given.''


 


His areas of interest include human motivation, leadership, corporate transformation and accountability, and sustainable economic and human performance. He is co-author or co-editor of 16 books and has also written more than 50 journal articles, book chapters, cases, working papers, and notes. 


 


Nohria holds a degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and a Ph.D. in Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

 

 

 

 

Vivek Ranadive


 


Ranadive is a businessman, engineer, author, speaker, and philanthropist, who is the founder and CEO of TIBCO, one of the fastest-growing computing companies. Recently he created headlines by purchasing Sacramento Kings, a U.S. basketball team for a record USD 535 million. His passion for the game made him buy the team for such a whopping amount.


 


Ranadive earned a Master's and Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT in just four years and later on he got enrolled in Harvard University for MBA course. He started his first venture, a UNIX consulting company when he was a student at MIT.


 


In the year 1997 Ranadive established TIBCO Software Inc. which received funding from Cisco and Reuters.


 


He serves on the Board of Directors of Nielsen Holdings N.V. and on the Supervisory Board of The Nielsen Company B.V.


 


Apart from being a successful businessman, Ranadive is also a writer and has authored three books.
