Recognition means "worthy of consideration." If a person only does nice things for recognition or reward, the intention is shallow and they will cease to do nice things if they are not rewarded. 

But if a person does nice things with no expectation of reward, they are very deserving of recognition, and their time spent is worthy of consideration. 

It's always nice to know that selfless efforts are appreciated as it lets the person know they are valued and not taken for granted.
