It was Ernest Hemingway who lured Dan Olofsson to Africa.

"I read all his books," says the Swedish technology entrepreneur who

heads the consultancy Sigma, and they lodged in his imagination.

So when he and his wife, Christin, decided in the early 2000s to build a

winter home someplace warmer than their native Scandinavia, they

considered the Caribbean but eventually set their sights farther south.

"There's fantastic wildlife and nature in South Africa,"

the 65-year-old Olofsson says. "You don't have that in a lot of places."

Their plans grew to include a guest lodge at what is now the well-regarded

Thanda Safari Private Game Reserve, which opened in 2004.

("Thanda" is Zulu for "love.") Soon after, the Olofssons set out to acquire
a

private-island counterpart to their safari lodge and settled on one in the

Shungi Mbili Island Marine Reserve in southern Tanzania. After years of

negotiation and sustainability-minded construction it was rechristened Thanda
Island <http://www.thandaisland.com/>

and welcomed its first paying guests in August.

The property, which has five bedrooms and rents in its entirety for $10,000
a

night (for up to ten people), is roughly 20 acres ringed by coral reefs in
protected

waters that teem with sea life, including whale sharks, dolphins and five
species

of turtles. The closest inhabited land is Mafia Island, home to more
spectacular

marine life, trustworthy dive centers and traditional villages. Thanda
Island's

hospitality director, Antigone Meda, likens it to Zanzibar 30 years ago—and

while Zanzibar now has 200-room hotels, Mafia has about 200 hotel rooms.

(Thanda guests who don't helicopter in from Dar es Salaam fly to Mafia,

where Thanda staff greet them and ferry them over in a sleek

mahogany boat that would do James Bond proud.)

The Olofssons envisioned the island as a private paradise where they could

escape with their three children and eight grandchildren. But the Tanzanian

government wouldn't let them buy it unless it would contribute to tourism in

the country and protect marine wildlife. The couple complied but remained

committed to building a private family home. And here they were inspired by

another 20th-century American icon.

"We were at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port around the Fourth of

July three or four years ago," Olofsson recalls. "Looking around, we liked
the

New England style. Our South African property is more Zulu style. Here we

wanted something different, and we decided on New England." The resulting

house on Thanda, with its white wainscoting, peaked rooflines and pastel
palette,

mixes the American and the Scandinavian, with a few African flourishes like

bird's-nest lamps in the living room and colorful fabric on the chairs in
the library.

The design is intentionally hard to classify. Olofsson invested millions–

"Less than 10," he clarifies, though he is unsure of the exact amount–to
build

something that exists in very few places in the world. That's in addition to

the island itself, with its perfect white sand and clear turquoise

waters just feet away from the house.

The Olofssons were very hands-on with the villa and two freestanding

beach bandas (open-air bungalows, which allow the island to accommodate

groups of up to 28 people), with Christin designing the interiors and Dan,

a civil engineer by training, collaborating with the architects. He was
also the

visionary behind the villa's most striking feature, a glass rim-flow
swimming

pool that gleams with blue mosaic tiles and rises up from the deck to form
a

luminous cube. "This pool was quite exciting to design," he says. "I felt
like I was

just out of university, even though that was 40 years ago."

[image: The house and pool on Thanda Island]

*The house and pool on Thanda Island*

The food is far better than might be expected in such a remote location.
Much of it is caught nearby. Staff will harvest some of the abundant
oysters on demand and serve them with champagne. While importing luxury
foods and wine comes with a carbon footprint, the island was designed to be
self-sufficient. It's constructed with sustainable materials, and there's a
field of solar panels and a desalinization plant. The house and all its
infrastructure were also built in such a way that would allow them to be
taken apart and leave no trace on the island.

That eco-consciousness is important to Olofsson, who has invested heavily
in conservation in the marine reserve. Thanda is working with the Tanzania
Marine Parks department and a leading NGO, Sea Sense, on research projects
involving sea turtles, whale sharks and coral reefs. It's a continuation of
the commitment Olofsson, the biggest Swedish philanthropist in Africa (and
plenty generous at home), made when he established the Thanda Foundation in
South Africa in 2005. Among other achievements, its Star for Life arm has
put 110,000 children through HIV-prevention education programs. "We are at
a point in our lives where we're able to give back to society, and I think
when you're there, you have to do it," he says.

While Thanda has made a point of hiring most of its staff from Mafia Island
and is working to improve education there, marine conservation is the main
focus. Not that guests would suspect that much of the wildlife is on the
endangered species list. There are frequent turtle and dolphin sightings on
the boat ride from Mafia, and it's not uncommon for guests to find
themselves swimming among half a dozen whale sharks, the biggest fish in
the sea.

That, it turns out, is Thanda Island's greatest luxury: the access to such
an ecosystem—and a solicitous staff to make it easier to commune with it.
(They'll even drag a copper bathtub onto the beach for a sunset soak.)
"Being a big family on an island to yourself," Olofsson says, "there is a
special feeling to that."

And if it's a rainy day, there's still plenty to enjoy—Thanda Island is
home to what was the largest Hemingway collection in Sweden, now sitting on
shelves spanning 20 feet in a clean, well-lighted place.

Photos That Take You To The Heart Of Jodhpur, India's Blue City
By Erin Kelly on August 29, 2016
baxiabhishek/FlickrMehrangarh Fort is one of the oldest forts in
India. It was built around 1460, and looms over 400 feet above the
city of Jodhpur.
Located in the Thar Desert, the dynamic city of Jodhpur, India breaks
the starkness of its surroundings with intense punches of color. The
metropolis is cloaked in blue not just for aesthetic purposes; the hue
historically demarcated the residence of the Brahmin, a caste of
priests and protectors, and thus was meant to deter looters should the
city ever come under siege.

Others outside the Brahmin apparently enjoyed the blue aesthetic,
because almost all homes in the old city have the shade splashed onto
their walls. Behind and before the city's azure walls, Jodhpur
residents live life in full color – and at full speed. Marketplaces
abound in the city, and someone is always ready to sell you
hand-crafted goods. Lonely Planet describes the Blue City as "a tangle
of winding, glittering, medieval streets, which never seem to lead
where you expect them to, scented by incense, roses and sewers, with
shops and bazaars selling everything from trumpets and temple
decorations to snuff and saris." If you can't make it out to
experience the Blue City for yourself, the photos above will give you
a taste of its unmatched vibrance.

[ ::: ♥Keep_Mailing♥ ::: ]™ Story: The Little Boy with Grandma

A little boy is telling his Grandma how "everything" is going wrong. School, family problems, health problems, problems with friends, etc.

Meanwhile, Grandma is baking a cake. She asks her grandson if he would like a snack, which, of course, he does.

"Here, have some cooking oil." *"Yuck" says the boy.
"How about a couple raw eggs? " "Gross, Grandma!"
"Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?"

"Grandma, those are all yucky!"

To which Grandma replies: "Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves. But when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake!

God works the same way. Many times we wonder why he would let us go through such bad and difficult times.

But

God
knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always work for good! We just have to trust Him and, eventually, they will all make something wonderful!"

A farmer in Bangladesh was preparing his land for planting crops. As he dug through the soil the equipments kept getting stuck in one place. Out of curiosity he decided to check out what was in there. He dug the ground and discovered a big box. The farmer quickly opened the box to see what was in it but to his disappointment, there were only black stones inside the box. He decided to throw those stones at the birds when they come to eat the crops at the time for harvesting. Eventually, a day came when the crops were ready and the birds come to eat them. So, he started throwing the stones at the birds from where ever they showed up. One day a man was walking by the field who sells precious stones such as pearls, diamonds, rubies etc. Two stones happened to fall right in front of him when the farmer threw them at the birds. The man brought the stones to the farmer and asked if he was willing to sell them to him for $5,000 each. The farmer thought that the man was joking so he replied, "No." Then the man offered $50,000 for each stone and explained that they were precious jewels. Now the farmer started crying saying that he had only 1 or 2 stones left and the rest were thrown away.

[ ::: ♥Keep_Mailing♥ ::: ]™ HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Massage These 3 Points to Reduce Your High Blood Pressure
While high blood pressure is caused by a variety of things, its most common cause is hypertension.
One of the most effective ways to treat it naturally is with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM),
which aims to bring your body back into balance. Let's take a look:

Qi (or Life Force Energy) is at the heart of Chinese reflexology and TCM.
It's the energy of creation and it flows through our body, just as blood circulates
through our arteries and veins.

Located within the body are 12 primary channels or pathways that enable Qi to flow.
When Qi is flowing through the body as it should, we are in a state of balance -
we feel energized, alive and healthy. But when Qi is disrupted, the disharmony in your
body will manifest as a physical symptom over time. To get a better idea of how Qi
works in the body, compare it to the flow of a river. If the river is flowing smoothly, then
the ecosystem is in balance. If on the other hand the river is obstructed, sediment begins to
accumulate, causing blockages both upstream and downstream.

In the body, stress tends to be the culprit that constricts the flow of Qi, causing
obstructed energy in some areas and limiting energy flow to others. However, applying pressure
to specific points has been known to help reduce high blood pressure. These pressure points
almost always involve those that treat disharmonies in the kidney and liver meridians
(energy channels that transport Qi throughout the body).

1. The Kidneys

Take Caution: As this point is located near an acupuncture point used for inducing labor,
if pregnant, do not massage this area.

To alleviate symptoms associated with hypertension, massage the kidney point.
Doing so will help boost your Qi within the kidney, strengthening and
harmonizing it, thus supporting kidney function.
Where: Your kidney reflexology point is located on the soles of both feet.
Imagine a horizontal line located halfway through your foot (line 3) and another
at the bottom of the ball of your foot (line 2). Next, imagine a vertical line dividing your foot in half.
This line intersects the horizontal lines 2 and 3.

How: Massage this point by pressing it with your thumb and rubbing it in an up and
down motion for about 15 to 30 seconds. For added pressure, you may also use
your knuckles. Repeat on the other foot, practicing this technique daily.
Tip: If skin irritation arises due to the friction of rubbing, stop massaging the point until
the skin heals. Alternatively, you can also use a lubricant such as almond oil.

2. The Liver

Take Caution: As this point is located near an acupuncture point used for
inducing labor. If pregnant, do not massage this area.

In TCM, the liver point plays a key role in ensuring the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body.
Emotions, such as anger and frustration, are associated with this organ and can thus
negatively impact its ability to balance and smooth the flow of Qi within the body.

Where: Located at the top of the foot, this point is found between the big toe and
the second toe. To find its precise location with your thumb, trace the bones of the
two toes until you feel the point at which they intersect. Then, slide your thumb about
a thumb-width above this intersection and press into the 'webbing' between the bones.

How: Press and hold this point for about one minute on each foot. Besides smoothing
the flow of Liver Qi in the body, it will also nourish the blood - the liver's primary function
includes filtering the blood and breaking down toxins in the body.

3. The Heart
Stress and tension are often the biggest culprits that raise blood pressure and
disrupt the natural flow of Qi in the body. When your body is stressed, one way to
combat the feeling of tension is to locate and massage the Heart point.

Where: Palm facing upwards, look at your wrist. At the base of your palm where
your hand meets your wrist, you will see a crease in the skin. And while there are
quite a few lines in this area, one will appear to be more prominent than the others.
Once you've identified this crease, notice where the base of your ring and pinky finger
meet and imagine a vertical line from this point reaching down toward your wrist crease.

How: Press on this point with your thumb and hold it down for about 60 seconds
on each wrist. Do so any time you feel stressed or upset to calm yourself down.

Indian man carries dead wife's body for 12km

By Sandeep SahuBhubaneswar

Amang Majhi died from tuberculosis on Tuesday night

An impoverished man in India carried his wife's body for 12km after the hospital where she died allegedly failed to provide an ambulance to carry the body back to their village.

Dana Majhi's wife Amang, 42, died from tuberculosis in the district hospital in Bhawanipatna town in Orissa state.

Mr Majhi said his village was 60km (37 miles) away and he couldn't afford to hire a vehicle.

The hospital authorities have denied his charge.

"The woman was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday and died the same night. Her husband took away her body without informing any hospital staff," senior medical official B Brahma said.

Mr Majhi, however, alleged that his wife died on Tuesday night and that he began walking with her body on Wednesday after the hospital staff kept asking him to remove the body.

"I kept pleading with the hospital staff to provide a vehicle to carry my wife's body, but to no avail. Since I am a poor man and could not hire a private vehicle, I had no choice but to carry her body on my shoulder," he said.

During his walk, Mr Majhi was accompanied by his 12-year-old daughter, Chaula

Early on Wednesday, he said, he wrapped up the body in cloth and began the long trek to his village in Melghar for the last rites, accompanied by his 12-year-old daughter Chaula.

He had walked for about 12km when some people on the way intervened and an ambulance finally arrived.

The cremation took place on Wednesday evening.

Compensation

The district collector for Kalahandi (where Bhawanipatna town is located) Brunda D said she arranged a vehicle to transport Amang's body as soon as she came to know about it.

"I have asked the local officials to provide 2,000 rupees ($30; £22) to the family under the Harischandra Yojana [a government scheme which entitles poor people the amount to cremate a family member]. Besides, the family would also get 10,000 rupees from the Red Cross," she said.

In February, the state government had announced a scheme to ensure that a mortuary vehicle was available to carry the bodies of the poor from the hospital to their homes.

But in a telling commentary on the state of the healthcare services in Orissa, at least half a dozen cases of bodies being transported on bicycles, trolley rickshaws and even wooden cots have been reported from remote areas in the past few months.

After reports of Mr Majhi's ordeal emerged, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik formally launched the scheme on Thursday.

Fruit Heads: I Photographed Fruit Salesmen Holding Fruit They Sell
Over Their Heads
28Kviews 1 week ago by Rahat Amin There is a story
about trees. Once a people asked a tree – "Oh tree, what's your name?"
The tree responded, "It's by the identity of the fruit".In our regular
life we meet random people. Some are job holders, some do business,
some are workers, some are students etc. But what if we can identify
them with what they do? I took a different initiative to capture an
unique segment of the large populations around me. The fruit
merchants. There are many fruit merchants, fruit salesmen around us in
many marketplaces. But they are the most low profile people around us.
We regularly purchase healthy fruits from them. Talk to them to a
certain extent. Pay them. Then leave. But how many times do we
remember their identity. It almost seems – their identity is by the
fruits they sell. A funny yet critical connection there is – with the
story I've told before.Composing this photography story was a big
changeling for me. Then suddenly I found my inspiration after
rethinking and rebooting the presentation of Belgian surrealist
painter René Magritte's work "THE SON OF MAN".The composition inspired
me so much…I thought of covering up the individual's face with the
very fruit he sells. Creating an unusual expression in the photograph.
And so began the Fruit Heads series. I hope you all will enjoy it.More
