When going on a low-fat diet, it's beneficial for the dieter to understand which foods are high in fat and cholesterol. Foods high in fat and cholesterol are bad for the heart and cardiovascular system, and can cause weight gain. The popularity of low-fat diets has been replaced by low-carb diets, but it's still more healthy to eat lean proteins rather than fatty foods.       Choose lean proteins such as skinless chicken or turkey. Red meat is a good source for protein, but it contains hefty portions of fat and cholesterol. If you choose to eat red meat, eat smaller portions and trim the fat off of the meat.

      Eat more vegetables for snacks and side dishes. Vegetables are filled with vitamins and minerals and contain heart-healthy carbohydrates instead of fats. Avoid adding fatty creams, gravy or butter to them to avoid additional fats.

    • Eat fruits for breakfast and for snacks. Fruits contain healthy carbohydrates and essential vitamins. You can eat a grapefruit for breakfast and obtain vitamins while avoiding fat and cholesterol.
