Mysterious And Abandoned Places Across The World That Have Turned Into A Mere Ghost Town1.Centralia, Pennsylvania This Pennsylvania ghost town was abandoned in 60’s after a fire broke out in the coal mines that used to run underneath the town. Almost after half a century – the city is still burning. Slowly like a hell pit.
2. Pripyat, Ukraine Pripyat is an abandoned city located in the Kiev region of Ukraine. Once home to some 50,000 people, the city has been left abandoned since 1986 due to a nearby nuclear disaster.
3. Carteret Islands A part of Papua New Guinea Islands, Carteret Islands are slowly submerging under water – thanks to global warming. The residents of the Carteret Islands are now widely known as the world’s first environmental refugees – for whom the government is organising relocation since last few years.
4. Wittenoom, Australia Due to poor hygiene and excessive dust at one of the companies (CSR) responsible for Blue Asbestos mining in the area, this city of Western Australia was abandoned in 1966.
5. Keelung, Taiwan These flats in Taiwan were built back in 90’s in anticipation of housing boom. But the boom never came – resulting into shortage of money to complete these flats, which now seem an abandoned society.
6. Picher, Oklahoma Once a major producer of Lead and Zinc, this town is now a ghost town due to contamination from its excessive mining operations – leaving one third of the town’s total children suffered from lead poisoning. In 2009 Picher was totally abandoned when its last few residents left at last.
7. San-Zhi, Taiwan Intended to build a vacation destination – especially for US military officers these Star-Trek inspired houses began construction in 1987 but couldn’t complete due to financial problems. They are now left to rot for no good reason.
8. North Brother Island, New York Once a quarantine station for patients with infectious diseases and rehabilitation centre for drug addicts, North Brother Island has now been completely abandoned from past 50 years.
9. Beichuan, China A sudden and devastating earthquake in 2008 virtually levelled each and every building of Beichuan – forcing its people to completely abandon the city and move to nearby colonies. Due to the extent of damage it is yet unclear whether the city will be rebuilt or simply left to go to ruins.
10. Hashima Island, Japan This forgotten island of Japan was once a home to the county’s coal operations. In 1974 when demand for coal dropped – the island was asked to be abandoned by local authorities.
