You are either ignorant or ill informed to say that all Indians understand Hindi. You may not be aware of the existence states where Hindi is not spoken.. Perhaps, it may also be that you may be considering only people knowing Hindi as Indians.
Thanks Mr. Tripathy for the compliment about Keralites. The importance we gave to education facilitated us to move out of the state for employment as we have limited opportunities due to lack of natural resources and now due to militant trade unionism. Though we demand wages without doing any work in Kerala and resort to strikes and hartals for any silly cause in the state we are good workers outside the state. It is to our credit and have a place in history that we are the only people in the world who had a hartal when Saddam Hussain was hanged. Though it is below our dignity to do physical work in the state we are prepared to be slaves in the Gulf countries.

Keralites are practical. They work throughout India. I worked in Gujarat for many years. In any mojor city of Gujarat Keralites out number all other south Indians. Even in remote areas of Odisha I came across lot of Malayalies 50/60 years back. They knew their mode of communications to people of large number of states in India is Hindi. As the state lack industires, becouse of their adoptablity they find job opportinuties in major steel plats like Rourkela, Bhili, Durgapur, Bokaro.

This direction has resulted in strong reaction from the two Dravida parties of Tamil Nadu. While trying to chill this opposition, Shanawas Hussain, the BJP spokesman has made a statement that there is nothing wrong in issuing such an order as Hindi is our RASHTRA BHASHA (National Language). It is a matter of shame that the spokesman of the ruling party of the country is ignorant of the fact that Hindi is not the national language of the country. It is only the official language, that too included in the constitution on the casting vote of the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly, as both English and Hindi got equal votes from the members. Unfortunately like the BJP spokesman, many in the country believe that Hindi is the national language. It is due to the valiant agitation by the unified DMK in mid sixties that Hindi is kept at bay and English is still being continued as the official language of the country. Incidentally, it this anti-Hindi agitation was the beginning of the the decline of Congress and growth of DMK in Tamil Nadu.Kerala leaders are spineless on the language issue as till now none from any party has come forward with any statement against the directions of the new govt. in this matter. Even in the sixties, when anti-Hindi agitation was going on in Tamil Nadu, there was no one from Kerala even to support Tamil Nadu on this issue. I appreciate the actions of the Dravida parties' leaders on this issue.T. M.
